MAT PILATES
Back to basics. But never boring.
Where strength starts, and keeps showing up.
Mat Pilates is the foundation of it all. No machines, no fuss - just your body, your breath, and seriously focused movement. Whether you’re brand new to Pilates or looking to refine your form and feel everything more deeply, this is where you build real, lasting strength from the inside out.
At Rise, we take mat work seriously - with small-group classes, expert cueing, and enough challenge to keep even seasoned movers humble (and shaking).
WHAT IS MAT PILATES?
Mat Pilates is a low-impact, floor-based practice designed to improve core strength, stability, flexibility, and postural alignment.
It’s rooted in the original method developed by Joseph Pilates - but with a Rise twist: modern flows, fresh playlists, and instructors who actually explain what your pelvis is doing.
You’ll move through precise, controlled sequences using just your own bodyweight (and maybe a few props like balls, bands, or magic circles). The movements may look small - but trust us, they pack a punch.

THE BENEFITS OF MAT PILATES
Mat Pilates is your low-impact secret weapon - powerful, accessible, and endlessly adaptable. Some of the benefits include:
- Builds deep core and pelvic floor strength
- Improves posture, spinal mobility, and body awareness
- Increases flexibility, balance, and joint support
- Reduces pain, stiffness, and injury risk
- Enhances breath connection and mental focus
- Supports recovery from injury, stress, and burnout
- Helps you feel grounded, energised, and back in your body
WHAT TO EXPECT IN A MAT PILATES CLASS
You’ll join a small group (12 people max) in our calm, beautiful mat studio. Your instructor will guide you through breath-led sequences that focus on strength, control, and that delicious slow burn.
Some classes flow, others pulse - some are slow and stretchy, others will sneak up on your abs and politely ruin them for the next 48 hours. We always offer options, explain everything clearly, and keep the vibe friendly and ego-free.
Mat Pilates is perfect for early mornings, Sunday resets, post-reformer recovery, and anyone wanting to feel like a more connected, powerful version of themselves.

MAT PILATES LINGO: DECODED
Neutral Spine: Your natural spinal curve - not tucked, not arched. We’ll help you find it.
Imprint: A slight tilt of the pelvis that flattens your lower back into the mat. Great for core engagement.
Tabletop: Legs up at 90 degrees - your thighs vertical, your shins parallel to the floor. It’ll show up a lot.
C-curve: A rounded spine, usually in seated ab work. Think “scoop and hollow,” not “slouch.”
Articulation: The slow, segment-by-segment movement of the spine - e.g. rolling down one vertebra at a time.
Don’t worry if it all sounds like a new language. We’ll translate every step of the way.
IS MAT PILATES RIGHT FOR ME?
Mat Pilates is for every body. You don’t need to be flexible or fit. You don’t need fancy clothes or prior experience. You just need to show up, and breathe.
Whether you're:
- Rebuilding after burnout, injury or birth
- Looking for a low-impact strength workout
- Wanting to move more mindfully
- Or just need something kind, but powerful...
Mat Pilates will meet you exactly where you are.

Your First Mat Pilates Class at Rise
- What to Know
Walking into a new class can feel daunting - we completely get it. Here's everything you need to know before you arrive so you can walk in feeling prepared rather than nervous:
What to wear: Comfortable, form-fitting clothing is best. You'll be on your back, side, and front, so anything you'd wear to yoga or a gentle workout works perfectly.
Footwear: We sell grip socks at the studio if you'd like a pair - just ask when you arrive.
What to bring: Just yourself and some water. We provide mats and all props in the studio. You don't need to bring anything extra.
Arriving: Give yourself 5 minutes before class to settle in and let your instructor know it's your first time. They'll make sure you feel at home and give you any extra context before you start.
Modifications: Every exercise in our mat classes comes with options. If something doesn't feel right, your instructor will offer an alternative - no questions asked. You are never expected to push through discomfort.
Afterwards: You might feel surprisingly tired in a quiet, satisfying kind of way. The deep core and stabiliser work in mat Pilates tends to catch up with people 24 hours later - that's normal, and a sign things are working.
Frequently Asked Questions
FAQ's - Mat Pilates at Rise
Do I need any Pilates experience for mat classes?
None at all. Our mat classes are completely beginner-friendly and your instructor will guide you through every movement with clear, accessible cues. If you're ever unsure, just ask - there's no such thing as a silly question at Rise.
How is mat Pilates different from yoga?
Both are mindful, breath-led practices - but Pilates is more focused on building precise, functional strength and stability, particularly through the core and posterior chain. Yoga tends to prioritise flexibility, breath, and stillness. Many people love both and find they complement each other brilliantly.
How big are the mat classes?
Our mat classes have a maximum of 12 people - intentionally small so your instructor can give you real, individual attention and correct your form throughout the session.
Is mat Pilates suitable for postnatal recovery?
We offer dedicated postnatal mat classes at Rise - babies are very welcome. For general mat classes during the early postnatal period, please check with your midwife or GP first, and always let your instructor know so they can offer the right modifications for you.
Can I do mat Pilates alongside reformer classes?
Absolutely - and we'd actively encourage it. Mat and reformer complement each other really well. Many of our members mix both across the week, using mat for recovery or deeper body awareness work and reformer for their main strength sessions. Your Rise membership covers all class types.
What props do you use in mat classes?
We use a range of small props including Pilates balls, resistance bands, and magic circles depending on the class. All props are provided in the studio - you don't need to bring anything with you.
Is mat Pilates good for back pain?
Many clients come to Rise specifically because they're dealing with back pain, and find mat Pilates really helpful for building the core strength and postural awareness that supports a healthier spine. Always let your instructor know about any pain or injury before class, and check in with your GP or physio if you're unsure whether it's right for you at this stage.
How do I book?
