WUNDA CHAIR PLATES LINGO: EXPLAINED
New to the Wunda Chair? Here’s what some of the language means - no prior knowledge required.
Wunda Chair: A compact Pilates apparatus with spring-loaded pedals that provide adjustable resistance.
Pedal / Split Pedals: The moving part of the chair you press or lift against the springs - sometimes as one piece, sometimes independently.
Springs: The resistance system of the chair. More springs = more support or challenge, depending on the exercise.
Standing Work: Exercises performed standing on or beside the chair to build strength, balance, and control.
Stability & Control: Maintaining alignment and steadiness as you move - a key focus of Wunda Chair work.
Full-Body Integration: Using your core, arms, and legs together rather than isolating one area.
You don’t need to memorise any of this - we’ll guide you through everything during class.

Wunda Chair vs Reformer
- What's the Difference?
Both use spring resistance, both are rooted in the original Pilates method, and both will make you work harder than you expected. But they offer a different kind of challenge.
The Reformer is a larger machine where you lie, sit, stand, and kneel on a sliding carriage. The springs create resistance as you push or pull the carriage, building strength through long, flowing movement sequences. It's brilliant for full-body conditioning and is often the entry point for people new to apparatus Pilates.
The Wunda Chair is compact and upright. Rather than a sliding carriage, you work with spring-loaded pedals - pressing, lifting, and controlling them from seated, standing, and kneeling positions. Because the base of support is smaller and the movements more upright, the demands on your balance, stability, and deep core are significant. Many experienced Pilates practitioners find the Wunda Chair the more challenging of the two.
Which should you try? If you're newer to Pilates, the Reformer is a wonderful place to start. If you already have a practice and want to take your strength, balance, and body control to the next level, Wunda Chair is a brilliant progression. Many of our members do both - and find they complement each other beautifully. Your Rise membership covers all class types.
Your First Wunda Chair Class at Rise
- What to Know
Never used a Wunda Chair before? Here's what to expect so you can walk in feeling prepared:
The apparatus: The Wunda Chair is a solid, padded seat with spring-loaded pedals at the front. Your instructor will walk you through how it works before class begins - it's more intuitive than it looks, and the springs are set for you based on the exercise.
What to wear: Comfortable, form-fitting clothing works best. You'll be seated, standing on and beside the chair, and kneeling, so anything too loose can get in the way. Leggings and a fitted top are ideal.
Grip socks: Required for all Rise classes. We sell them at the studio if you need a pair - just ask when you arrive.
Arriving: Give yourself 5-10 minutes before your first class so your instructor can introduce you to the equipment and answer any questions. There are no prerequisites and no prior Wunda Chair experience needed.
Modifications: Every exercise can be adapted. If something doesn't feel right, your instructor will offer an alternative - always. You're never expected to push through discomfort at Rise.
Afterwards: Wunda Chair has a habit of finding muscles you didn't know were there - particularly through the legs, glutes, and deep core. That satisfying ache the next day means things are working exactly as they should.
Frequently Asked Questions
FAQ's - Wunda Chair Pilates at Rise
Do I need Pilates experience to try Wunda Chair?
Some familiarity with Pilates is helpful but not essential. Your instructor will guide you through everything clearly, and all exercises can be modified. If you're completely new to Pilates, we'd suggest trying a Reformer or Mat class first to build your foundations - but feel free to get in touch and we'll help you figure out the best starting point.
Is Wunda Chair Pilates suitable for beginners?
It's one of the more challenging class types we offer, but that doesn't mean beginners can't access it. Your instructor will always work with where you are and progress things at a pace that feels right for your body. If you're unsure, just drop us a message before booking.
How is Wunda Chair different from mat Pilates?
Mat Pilates uses bodyweight and small props. The Wunda Chair adds spring resistance and introduces a very different set of movement challenges - particularly around balance, stability, and upright strength. Many clients find Wunda Chair reveals weaknesses that mat work alone wouldn't surface, making it an incredibly valuable addition to a Pilates practice.
Is it suitable if I have an injury or back pain?
Many Wunda Chair exercises are wonderfully supportive for people with back issues, but it's always important to let your instructor know before class so they can guide you safely. Check with your GP or physio first if you have a diagnosed condition.
How many people are in a Wunda Chair class?
A maximum of 8 kept small so your instructor can give you real, individual attention throughout the session.
Can I combine Wunda Chair with other classes at Rise?
Absolutely. Wunda Chair works brilliantly alongside Reformer, Mat, and Half Barrel classes. Your Rise membership covers all class types, so you can mix and match freely across the week.
