REFORMER PILATES

Strengthen. Stabilise. Shake (a little).

Welcome to the spring-based magic. Reformer Pilates is where mindful movement meets momentum and powerful results - challenging your body in all the right ways, with low impact and high reward. It looks fancy (hello, moving carriage and springs), but it’s actually one of the most accessible, supportive, and transformative ways to move your body.

At Rise, we make reformer Pilates feel accessible, empowering, and (dare we say) kinda fun.

Whether you’re new to Pilates or already obsessed, our small-group reformer classes will help you build strength, improve posture, and feel genuinely incredible in your body.

WHAT IS REFORMER PILATES?

The reformer is a bed-like frame with a sliding platform (called the carriage), resistance springs, a foot bar, straps, and pulleys. You’ll lie down, kneel, stand, plank, and press through smooth, controlled movements that challenge your body in all the right ways - without the joint impact of other workouts.

Each spring can be adjusted to change the level of resistance, making it customisable for every body and ability level. It supports where you need it and challenges where it counts.

It might look intimidating, but once you’re on it? You’ll never look back.

THE BENEFITS OF REFORMER PILATES

Reformer isn’t just good for your abs - it’s good for your whole self. At Rise, our clients keep coming back because reformer Pilates helps them:

- Build deep, lasting strength (especially core and glutes)

- Improve posture, balance, and coordination

- Develop full-body tone and flexibility

- Reduce pain, stiffness, and injury risk

- Support recovery post-injury, and postnatally

- Feel calm, confident, and a little taller when they leave

You’ll feel the difference - not just during class, but when you’re carrying kids, walking tall, or dancing in the kitchen on a Tuesday night.

WHAT TO EXPECT IN A REFORMER PILATES CLASS

Classes are small (max 8 people), so you’ll never feel lost in the crowd. Whether it’s your first time or your fiftieth, you’ll be guided by expert instructors who focus on form, flow, and making sure you get the most out of every single movement.

Expect a mix of strength-building sets, stretching sequences, controlled breathwork, and maybe a few moments where your thighs tremble and you whisper, “oh my god.” Don’t worry - that’s the good bit.

Each class includes clear cues, personal support, great playlists, and a welcoming energy that makes the hard stuff feel a little more joyful.

REFORMER PLATES LINGO: EXPLAINED

The Reformer: the whole machine - carriage, springs, straps, and all.

The Carriage: the sliding platform you lie or kneel on. It moves when you do.

Springs: adjustable tension you’ll add or remove for resistance (don’t worry, we’ll handle this part for you at first).

Footbar: the bar you push against with your feet or hands. It adjusts depending on what we’re doing.

Straps: you’ll use these for arm and leg work. They’re weirdly satisfying.

If it still sounds like a foreign language? That’s okay. We teach you everything as you go. No pop quiz, promise.

IS REFORMER PILATES FOR ME?

Yes! Absolutely. Whether you’re:

- Getting back into movement

- Looking to cross-train safely

- Postnatal and rebuilding your core

- Recovering from injury

- A total beginner

- Or someone who wants their legs to tremble for a good reason...

Reformer Pilates is adaptable, empowering, and suitable for all levels. You don’t need to be flexible or “fit” - just open to learning something new (and probably loving it).

Your First Reformer Class at Rise
- A Quick Guide

If you've never been on a reformer before, we want you to feel completely prepared before you walk through the door. Here's exactly what to expect from your first session at Rise Pilates Studio in Keyworth:

What to wear: Comfortable, form-fitting clothing works best - you'll be lying, lunging, and planking, so anything too loose can get in the way. Leggings and a fitted top are perfect.

Grip socks: These are required for hygiene and safety on the reformer. If you don't have a pair, we sell them in the studio - just let us know when you arrive.

Arriving: We recommend arriving 5-10 minutes early for your first class so your instructor can show you the machine, explain the springs, and answer any questions. There's no such thing as a silly question here.

The class itself: Your instructor will guide you through every movement with clear, friendly cues. Expect a warm-up, a full-body sequence, and a stretch at the end. The springs will be set for you - you won't need to figure any of that out yourself.

Afterwards: Most first-timers describe feeling a mix of pleasantly tired and unexpectedly calm. You might feel it in your core, glutes, or inner thighs the next day - that's a very good sign.

You're not expected to know anything. You just need to show up.

Reformer Pilates vs Gym, Yoga and Mat Pilates...
What's the Difference?

We get asked this a lot, so here's an honest breakdown:

Reformer Pilates vs the gym: The gym is great for building muscle, but it often neglects mobility, posture, and the smaller stabilising muscles that protect your joints. Reformer Pilates targets all of those things while still building real strength - and it's much kinder on your body long-term. A lot of our members use reformer alongside the gym, and find it completely transforms how they move.

Reformer Pilates vs yoga: Yoga is beautiful for flexibility, mindfulness, and breath. Reformer adds resistance and strength-building into that same mindful, breath-led framework. If yoga leaves you feeling calm, but you want to feel stronger too, reformer is a brilliant next step.

Reformer Pilates vs Mat Pilates: Mat Pilates uses only bodyweight. The reformer adds spring resistance, which means you can work both with and against the springs - making some exercises easier to access (great for beginners and those recovering from injury) and others significantly more challenging. It's the same method, with a lot more tools to play with.

At Rise, we offer both - so you can mix and match depending on what your body needs that week.

Frequently Asked Questions

FAQ's - Reformer Pilates at Rise

Do I need experience to try reformer Pilates?

Not at all. Our reformer classes are suitable for complete beginners. Your instructor will explain everything before you start, and every exercise can be modified to suit your level. You'll never be left wondering what to do.

How many people are in a reformer class?

A maximum of 8. We keep class sizes small deliberately - it means your instructor can give you real attention, correct your form, and personalise your session in a way that simply isn't possible in larger classes.

What should I bring to my first class?

Just yourself, some water, and comfortable workout clothes. Grip socks are required - we sell them at the studio if you need a pair. You don't need to bring a mat or any equipment.

Is reformer Pilates good for back pain?

Many of our clients come to us specifically because of back pain, and find reformer Pilates incredibly helpful for building the core strength and spinal support that reduces it. That said, we always recommend checking with your GP or physio first if you have an existing injury or condition - and always letting your instructor know before class so they can guide you safely.

Is it suitable during pregnancy or postnatally?

We offer postnatal classes at Rise. For pregnancy, please check with your midwife or GP first, and always inform your instructor. We can adapt exercises where appropriate, and your wellbeing is always our first priority.

How often should I do reformer Pilates?

Most people notice a real difference coming 2-3 times per week. Even once a week consistently will build strength and improve how you feel over time. Our memberships are structured around 4, 8, 12, and 16 classes per four-week period so you can find a rhythm that fits your life.

How do I book a class?

Head to our timetable page to see all available sessions and book online. If you're not sure which class to start with, drop us a message - we're happy to point you in the right direction.

Where are you located, and is there parking?

We're at 9 The Square, Keyworth, NG12 5JT - easily reachable from West Bridgford, Ruddington, Cotgrave, Tollerton, and surrounding areas. Free parking is available at Bunny Lane Car Park, just a couple of minutes' walk away, for up to two hours.
