Pilates After Breast Cancer: Strength, Recovery, and the Power to Rise
October Is Breast Cancer Awareness Month - But at Rise, We Live It Every Day

If you’ve survived breast cancer, or supported someone who has, you know that recovery doesn’t end when treatment does.
Whether you’ve faced chemotherapy, radiation, surgery, or all of the above, healing is not just physical. It’s emotional. It’s mental. It’s deeply personal.
Pilates isn’t a magic cure, but it can be a lifeline - a way to rebuild not just strength, but a sense of self. At Rise, we understand this journey because we’ve walked it. And we’ve built our studio to be a space of safe, intelligent, body-led movement - especially for women navigating life after breast cancer.
Why Pilates Supports Breast Cancer Survivors So Beautifully
A breast cancer diagnosis takes more than your energy - it can take your confidence, identity, and relationship with your body. Treatment may leave you with fatigue, limited mobility, scar tissue, weight changes, and a fear of pushing your body too hard.
Pilates offers a different way forward.
Gentle. Supportive. Rehabilitative. Designed to listen to the body, not overpower it.
Here’s how Pilates supports survivors:
🤍 Breathwork calms the nervous system, relieves tension, and supports lymphatic drainage (which helps prevent lymphedema)
💪 Controlled movement helps rebuild upper body mobility, especially after mastectomy or lumpectomy
🌿 Whole-body focus means the practice meets you where you are - even if one part of your body is healing
🌸 Gentle progressions allow you to regain strength safely, with minimal risk of re-injury or overload
✨ Emotional empowerment: Pilates builds confidence and helps you reconnect with your body as a source of strength, not just survival
What Recovery Actually Looks Like
Let’s be real: it’s not linear. There are days you’ll feel strong and powerful. There are days you’ll feel tired, angry, or disconnected. All of it is normal.
That’s why at Rise, we encourage movement to start small, with permission to grow at your own pace.
Phased Pilates recovery might look like this:
Phase 1 (Days 3–14 post-treatment): breathwork, posture awareness, light shoulder rolls, brushing hair, gentle stretching
Phase 2 (Weeks 4–6): seated or supine movement, spinal mobility, light resistance bands, more structured exercises
Phase 3 (Week 6+): reformer, tower, and mat exercises focusing on back strength, posture, shoulder mobility, and core stability
And most importantly: no pressure. No pushing through pain. No “bouncing back.” This isn’t about snapping back into a pre-treatment body - it’s about rising into a new one.
Pilates Isn’t Just Physical - It’s Emotional Recovery Too
You’re not just rebuilding muscles. You’re learning to trust your body again. You’re reclaiming movement. You’re giving yourself space to feel - whether that’s pride, grief, anger, joy, or all of the above.
Our instructors know how to create a safe space for that. Not just by guiding you through correct form, but by holding space for the woman showing up, day by day, breath by breath.
Healthy Habits Beyond the Mat
Healing doesn’t stop when class ends.
A few powerful habits we recommend for survivors:
Walk outside daily – for mood, mobility, and bone density
Rest often – recovery is not laziness
Nourish your body – plant-rich meals, low sugar, and inflammation-reducing choices make a huge difference
Stay consistent – movement routines build structure and self-trust
Find support – through survivors’ groups, friends, or just a trusted instructor who sees you
A Little Inspiration From the Pilates Lineage
Did you know that Pilates elder Eve Gentry had a radical mastectomy in 1955 and couldn’t lift her arms afterwards? After a year of working directly with Joseph Pilates, she regained full mobility - and went on to teach others the same.
That’s the power of this method. When approached with care, patience, and compassion, Pilates becomes a tool not just for recovery - but for transformation.
Final Thought
Breast cancer changes you - but it doesn’t define you. And it doesn’t get the final word on how strong, powerful, and connected you get to feel in your own body.
Pilates can help guide you back home to yourself.
Whether you're newly post-treatment, years into remission, or supporting someone you love - Rise is here to support you, wherever you are on the journey.
